UK: Mushroom lifespan extended through use of paper, lack of plastic

Mushrooms are a wonderful autumnal vegetable, great for adding to soups and stews. However, maintaining the freshness of mushrooms can be a challenge, especially when they quickly turn slimy and lose their texture. However, experts from Urban Farm-It have revealed simple yet effective storage hacks to keep your mushrooms fresh for longer. They say using paper is key to stopping mushrooms from spoiling early.

They said: "Storing mushrooms correctly is crucial to maintaining their texture and freshness. Mushrooms are highly absorbent, so it's important to allow them to breathe and avoid moisture build-up. Using a breathable material like a brown paper bag helps to draw out excess moisture and keeps them from becoming slimy."

They said it is time to ditch the plastic storage containers and opt for paper, like brown paper bags or paper towels, that allow the mushrooms to breathe while also taking on any potential excess moisture. They added: "One of the most common mistakes we see is people storing mushrooms in sealed plastic containers.

"These trap moisture, which accelerates spoilage and can turn mushrooms slimy in just a few days. Always remove them from plastic packaging and store them in paper or a breathable alternative to prolong their freshness."
