Ecuador has started exporting blueberries to Hong Kong. Initially, the country is sending three pallets a week, a volume it expects to double as the season progresses. This export joins other Ecuadorian products already present in the international market such as yellow pitahaya and pomegranate.
Nobis Fruit Company, part of the Nobis group, has spearheaded the introduction of the AtlasBlue blueberry variety in Hong Kong. To meet the strict quality standards of the Hong Kong market, the company has invested in state-of-the-art technology, such as a sizing machine that optimizes fruit selection by size, minimizing manual errors and guaranteeing the blueberries delivered have the firmness and Brix level required.
"Introducing our blueberries in Hong Kong is a great step that reaffirms our commitment to quality and innovation. The unique characteristics of our Ecuadorian soils allow us to offer the Asian market a differentiated product that meets our customers' high expectations," stated Luis Ponce, General Manager of Nobis Fruit Company.
Despite the challenges imposed by high airfares from Ecuador, the company's commercial strategy has focused on positioning Ecuador as a novel and attractive origin for importers. Nobis Fruit Company plans to expand its export volume to key markets, such as the United States, Singapore, Malaysia, Turkey, Spain, and the Netherlands, during the 2024-2025 period.
