Bulgaria to adopt French and Spanish hail suppression methods

Ground-based generators with silver iodide for hail protection will be tested in a pilot mode in two zones where the use of rockets is prohibited, reported Ivan Kapitanov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture in Bulgaria.

During a meeting with Claude Berthet, director of the National Association for the Study and Fight against Atmospheric Disasters in France, and Prof. José Luis Sanchez from the University of Leon, Spain, Kapitanov familiarized himself with the French and Spanish experience in combating hail using generators.

The guests emphasized that the method is approved by the World Meteorological Organization and has been successfully implemented in France and Spain in areas where traditional systems are inapplicable. The method allows for reducing the damage caused by hail to agricultural produce by up to 40%. It is more cost-effective, can be used in urban areas, and does not require highly qualified personnel.
