"The product is not in short supply and the quality is very encouraging, given the full range of calibres. Although we have to wait for the final results, we are optimistic at the moment," says Giancarlo Elmi, owner of Mitica (in Rioveggio, Bologna), who is in the middle of the campaign season with his sons Gionatan and Tommaso and all his staff.

"We started the season in mid-September," explains Giancarlo, "and the producers will continue to supply us with chestnuts and marrons for a few more weeks. In some areas the heavy rains have slowed down the harvest."

Mitica exports 40% of its products and works mainly with large Italian and foreign retailers, and is known as one of the largest Italian companies in the sector. Abroad, we export a lot to Germany, Austria and Switzerland," explains Elmi, "while in Italy we work with all the major retail chains. This year we have chestnuts and marrons in all calibres, for those who want the best and for those who prefer a premium product. What distinguishes each batch is the high quality."

There is no room for improvisation in achieving this quality: Mitica first selects its suppliers and, once in stock, carefully checks each batch, from pre-cleaning and sterilisation to calibration and packaging.

Mitica has three main commercial brands: the Nella chestnut, the Nando chestnut and the Gino chestnut. "The latter is a 'Florentine chestnut', one of the national varieties, which meets all the high quality requirements of an increasingly demanding public in terms of quality, respect for nature and love of the land. The wood of the Florentine chestnut has an ancient flavour that evokes our history, our traditions, our rural culture, where chestnut groves were work, food, family and home. That's how - says Giancarlo Elmi - I came up with the idea of valorising this fruit, rich in sugars and carbohydrates, to create a new brand of marrons that reflects and keeps alive the history of this territory, dedicating the name 'Gino' to the memory of my father."

"The prices are good," concludes Giancarlo, " to the point where the producers are well rewarded. The product will certainly be available for the large-scale retail sector until Christmas, while for chestnuts and chestnut specialists, sales will generally continue until March."
