One of Azerbaijan's most exported products is fresh persimmon. Agricultural expert Mirdjavid Gasanov reported that there is an increasing interest in persimmon production in Azerbaijan and the export of this product will continue to grow.
"In Azerbaijan, new intensive persimmon orchards were mainly created in the plains regions. Five years ago, interest in persimmon production was very low, and farmers even destroyed such plantations. Recently, however, farmers have shown interest in producing persimmons and have established new orchards," said the expert.
According to the State Customs Committee, in January-July 2024, Azerbaijan exported 3,651 tons of pomegranates for $3.2 million. This is 2.4 times less in monetary terms and 1.7 times less in quantity compared to the same period last year.
The chairman of the Azerbaijani Association of pomegranate producers and exporters reported that significant precipitation in the republic, as well as strong heat, affected the yield of this crop.
Azerbaijani pomegranate is mainly sent to the Russian market. Thus, according to the State Statistics Committee, last year, 85% of the total pomegranate exports – 24,313 tons – went to Russia. Additionally, 368 tons were delivered to Belarus and 441 tons to Kazakhstan. Azerbaijan's pomegranates were also imported by Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, and several other countries.
It is noteworthy that Azerbaijan ranks first in the world in the number of cultivated pomegranate varieties. The republic grows varieties such as "pink gyuleysha", "bala mursel", "Azerbaijani gyuleysha", "thin-skinned", "veles", "iri gilya".
