Durian custard apples, also known as durian atemoya, are currently available at farmgate prices ranging from $2.17 to $3.16 per kilogram in Vietnam, marking a decrease from the previous year. Originating from Taiwan, this fruit entered the Vietnamese market four years ago with initial prices between $15.80 and $19.75 per kilogram. The decline in prices over the last two years is attributed to an increase in supply. The fruit, harvested from August to January, is known for its unique fragrance and sweetness. In Son La Province, the price for the highest grade of durian custard apples is between $2.96 and $3.16, while the smaller sizes are priced at $2.17.
The Me Lech Cooperative in Son La's Mai Son District, which began cultivating the fruit in 2021 after importing seedlings from Taiwan, has expanded its cultivation area to 100 hectares, a significant increase from the previous year. This expansion is mirrored by other local farmers, resulting in a production rate of 20 tons per hectare. Despite the price drop, farmers like Tien from Son La report continued profitability, with the Me Lech Cooperative highlighting that a hectare can yield approximately $47,400 at $2.37 per kilogram. The Son La Department of Agriculture and Rural Development notes that the province has 970 hectares dedicated to durian custard apple cultivation, expecting production of over 7,100 tons this year, with Mai Son District being the largest producer.
