Nepal imports $403k worth of bananas from India for Chhath festival amid rising demand

In Janakpurdham, the capital of Madesh, Nepal, bananas valued at approximately $403,225 (50 million rupees) have been imported from India for the Chhath festival. The festival, which necessitates fasting, traditionally includes bananas as an essential offering to God. Bishweshwar Yadav, President of Janakpur Fruits and Vegetables Traders Committee, noted the increase in demand for bananas during this period, leading to imports from India due to insufficient local production. Compared to the previous year, when imports were valued at over $322,580 (40 million rupees), this year has seen an increase. Bananas from regions such as Assam, West Bengal, Hajipur, Thakurganj, and Champaran are being imported, as stated by Bhuvneshwar Purve, Secretary of the Committee. The cost of bananas has risen by 20 percent from last year, with prices ranging between $4.03 to $8.06 (Rs.500 to Rs.1000) per spike. Despite the potential for local banana production, imports continue due to the lower cost of Indian bananas compared to those produced domestically.
