Georgian tangerine exports see significant increase

The export of Georgian tangerines has seen a remarkable rise. From January to September 2024, Georgia exported 9,431 tons of tangerines valued at $5.4 million, compared to 1,980 tons worth $1.1 million in the same period last year.

The average export price for Georgian tangerines, excluding taxes, was 57 cents per kilogram. It's worth noting that the export price has remained roughly the same as the previous year.

Russia serves as the primary export market for Georgian tangerines. Specifically, in the first nine months of the current year, Georgia exported 8,068 tons of tangerines to Russia, amounting to $4.85 million, which represents 86% of the tangerine exports.

As for imports, this year the country received 4,707 tons of tangerines valued at $3.06 million, compared to 3,273 tons at $2.5 million over the same nine-month period last year.

Georgia primarily imports tangerines from Turkey. For instance, this year, 4,518 tons of tangerines worth $2.93 million were imported from Turkey, accounting for 96% of the imports.

This year, farmers in Adjara reported an early start to the tangerine harvest season, beginning on November 1. They anticipate that the harvest volume will be lower than last year's due to unfavourable climatic conditions. In response to these challenges, the government of Adjara has increased subsidies for tangerine farmers.
