Algarve citrus yield up 10 percent despite challenges

AlgarOrange's president, José Oliveira, communicated to Lusa agency that this year's citrus yield in the Algarve region of Portugal was approximately 10 percent higher than an average year. Despite challenges such as water scarcity and pest infestations, the previous season was described as favorable. Oliveira also shared projections for the 2024-2025 season, anticipating outcomes similar to the season concluding in September. These insights are based on data from AlgarOrange members, who account for about 30% of the Algarve's citrus output.

A breakdown of citrus production shows oranges dominating with 84%, followed by tangerines and clementines at 8%, and lemons at 7%. However, the forecasted production of 335 thousand tons for the 2023-2024 harvest fell short of the initial 462 thousand tons projection made in 2022, based on European Union data. The Algarve is a crucial region for Portugal's citrus cultivation, representing 74% of the area and 88% of the national production.
