Egyptian clementines arrive on the market at a time when other competing origins are facing major difficulties. According to Ibrahim Gadallah, Development Manager at JanaFresh, "this year, Egypt is the place to go for quality clementines".
"Traditionally, we face a great deal of competition from various global players in the clementine sector. However, in recent years, competing origins have experienced difficulties as a result of climate change. This is all the more true this season with the floods in Spain and the drought in Morocco, impacting the dynamics of supply and demand. This helps us of course, but I don't think there will be a big shift in Egyptian export volumes," Gadallah adds..
The exporter explains his view: "In the clementine sector, Egyptian players are relying more on quality than on volumes. I therefore expect the natural annual growth rate will be maintained. The current competition's configuration will create opportunities to capture a larger market share, but above all to obtain fair prices. Let's not forget that we in Egypt also face challenges such as limited resources and logistical complexities."
"Egypt will be one of the few origins where quality clementines will be consistent this season, and it's best from an exporter point of view to place them in a price category that reflects this quality standard, rather than seeking to fill the market's volume deficit. The start of the season, compared with last season, gives us every reason to believe in this choice."
According to Gadallah, there are no major changes in Egypt this season in terms of varietal choice."The most easy peelers grown in Egypt are Honey Morcot, Freemont, and Mirav. Minneola is also available in smaller quantities."
"At JanaFresh, clementines make up 15-20% of our annual volumes, with calendars running from November to April 2025," he concludes.
