Samuel Villalona, President and CEO of SWG Group Inc:

"We are expanding into markets where green-skinned avocado is not popular, but has great potential"

Consumers are looking for fresh, high quality products with unique characteristics and this has opened up opportunities for avocado and mango exporters in the Dominican Republic. The country has established itself as a reliable supplier, particularly of green-skinned avocados, a lesser-known variety that is highly appreciated for its size and flavor. Unlike the traditional Hass avocado, this product is grown year-round and allows the demand to be met even outside the peak season, which runs from October to April.

SWG Group Inc, led by Samuel Villalona, has managed to position itself as an exporter of avocados and mangoes from the Dominican Republic, reaching markets such as the United States, Canada and Europe. Founded 17 years ago, the company started with the production of peppers and, over time, diversified its supply to include a wide range of fresh produce, consolidating its position as a supplier of fruits and vegetables from the Caribbean.

Samuel Villalona, President and CEO of SWG Group Inc.

Villalona says that green-skinned avocados are their flagship product. Unlike the popular Hass, this Dominican variety has unique characteristics that make it appealing in different regions. The high season for this avocado starts in October and lasts until April, and the U.S. market is its main destination.

"The Dominican Republic is the world's fifth largest avocado producer, and our green-skinned avocado is very popular in the United States and in some regions of Europe," says Villalona. The volumes exported are significant and allow SWG to maintain a continuous presence in the market, even in the off-season, as it has different varieties covering the entire year.

In addition to avocados, SWG Group exports mangoes, peppers and other tropical products. The company has an integrated supply chain, which means it manages every step, from production and packaging to export and import to the United States. According to Villalona, this approach makes it possible to reduce costs and to guarantee the supply of superior quality products. "Our competitive advantage lies in our full control of the chain and the quality we offer. We are constantly innovating in the field and we work hand in hand with local producers to maintain high standards," he says.

Despite its success, SWG is facing significant challenges, especially in the field of logistics. Villalona says that "high shipping costs are taking a toll on the competitiveness of Caribbean products, as Dominican tariffs are among the highest in the region."

The company is implementing a strategic expansion plan, with the goal of positioning itself in key regions of the United States, such as the west and northeast of the country. "We are expanding into markets where green-skinned avocado is not popular, but has great potential," says Villalona. This approach has allowed them to increase their export volumes year after year and adapt to changing market demands.
