Japan's growing demand boosts Thai pineapple exports

The Japanese pineapple market is experiencing growth, with a preference for fresh pineapples among local consumers. Japan's annual consumption surpasses 180,000 tons, encompassing juice, canned, and dried pineapple products. Due to the unsuitable climate for pineapple cultivation, Japan imports the majority of its pineapples, with Thailand being a key supplier. The economic partnership agreement between Thailand and Japan (JTEPA) facilitates negotiations for trade benefits for agricultural products, including Thai pineapples.

During a visit to the OTA Wholesale Market, Japan's largest market for various commodities, insights were gained on space management and auction processes. This visit is pivotal for enhancing agricultural marketing strategies in Thailand and expanding Thai produce presence in Japan. It also opens discussions on increasing Thai fruit and vegetable exports to Japan. The designation of Huai Mun Pineapple as a GI product in Japan highlights the quality of Thai produce and enhances its international market presence.
