Paynter's Farm extends season to sell 52,000 pounds of apples from local orchards

In response to the BC Tree Fruits Cooperative's closure earlier this year, Paynter's Farm in Kelowna has extended its operating season. The farm aims to distribute 100,000 pounds of apples from five local orchards. Jennay Oliver, the farm's owner, emphasized her commitment to supporting local agriculture and providing consumers with easy access to affordable, healthy produce. Despite the market gap left by the cooperative, which previously facilitated the sale of community-grown fruits, Paynter's Farm has successfully sold nearly half of its apple inventory, with 52,000 pounds remaining and two weeks left in their sales season. Oliver reports a smooth experience in handling the increased stock and a rise in customer visits.

Oliver remains optimistic about selling the remainder of the apples before the market's scheduled closure on December 1. The farm, typically closing in late October, has benefited from favorable weather and an abundance of apples, prompting an extended operational period. Unsold produce may be wholesaled to grocery stores or other markets. Paynter's Farm offers six apple varieties, with Oliver advocating for fresh consumption to fully appreciate their quality. She also expressed satisfaction in collaborating with local orchardists and is open to continuing these partnerships in the future.
