Meghalaya has achieved a milestone by exporting one metric tonne of Khasi Mandarin oranges to Dubai, facilitated through Air India Cargo. This initiative, originating from Guwahati Customs, represents the first direct export of this nature from the northeastern region. The Khasi Mandarin, distinguished by its Geographical Indication (GI) tag received in 2014, underscores the unique quality and provenance of this citrus fruit.
An official from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare highlighted the move as a stride towards integrating local farmers with the global market, overcoming logistical and economic hurdles. The state has engaged in partnerships with entities including Lulu Group International, Mother Dairy Fruits and Vegetables, and the National Cooperative for Organic Limited (NCOL) to facilitate this connection.
Following a pilot export of Khasi Mandarin and pineapples in 2022, which was supported by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the state has refined its export strategy. This has led to the successful shipment of 20 MT of the produce last year, and now, leveraging Guwahati Customs and Air India Cargo for this year's consignment. These steps are aimed at reducing transportation costs and enhancing transit efficiency.
To promote its specialty produce, Meghalaya has also organized festivals in major cities and is working on enhancing farmer capabilities in value addition, backed by renewable energy solutions. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to improve product quality, generate new income avenues for farmers, and align with the state's objective of economic inclusivity and doubling farmers' incomes.
