Miaoli County prepares for delayed strawberry season with events and new varieties

Taiwan's Miaoli County is gearing up for the strawberry season with Dahu Township's harvest expected to commence in mid-December, following a delay attributed to late-season typhoons. A press conference at the Miaoli County Government highlighted the season's onset and introduced a lineup of events aimed at attracting visitors to engage in fruit picking. Offerings such as strawberry wine and jam were also showcased.

During the conference, Miaoli County Magistrate Chung Tung-chin highlighted the county's 521 hectares dedicated to strawberry cultivation, primarily in Dahu, Shitan, and Zhuolan areas. The Hsiang Shui variety remains a favorite among consumers for its size, texture, and taste. Despite previous challenges, including verticillium wilt disease, the Dahu Township Farmers Association anticipates a fruitful season. Executive Director Hsu Chin-chih mentioned improvements in strawberry quality and supply, although prices are projected to rise by about 10% due to increased production costs.

For those interested in strawberry picking, the activity is priced at approximately NT$500 for 600 grams. Hsu also noted a shift towards planting new strawberry varieties like Jin Hsiang, known for its aroma and disease resistance. The county is also hosting events, including a concert at Dahu Wineland Resort, to celebrate the season. Visitors are encouraged to experience the harvest and the distinct flavors of Miaoli's strawberries.
