Rajasthani oranges challenge Nagpur's market dominance with sweeter taste

In Nagpur, recognized as India's premier orange producer and exporter, a new competitor has emerged from Rajasthan. This development has led to a shift in consumer preferences towards the Rajasthani oranges, impacting the market share of Nagpur's renowned variety. Daily, approximately 10 to 15 tons of oranges from Rajasthan have been arriving at Market Yard, noted for their smaller size but more appealing color and sweet taste. These oranges are fetching wholesale prices between ₹20 to ₹50 per kilogram ($0.24 to $0.61).

Concurrently, Amravati's orange supply, characterized by its larger size, thicker peels, and sour-sweet taste, continues to be significant, with 30 to 40 tonnes entering the market each day. Despite their competitive pricing of ₹15 to ₹40 per kilogram ($0.18 to $0.49), consumer preference is tilting towards the sweeter oranges from Rajasthan.

With the orange season anticipated to extend for another month and a half, and the upcoming arrival of the Mrigbahar crop in mid-January, there is an expectation of increased orange supplies to satisfy both the domestic and international markets. Despite these market shifts, traders have reported stable wholesale prices for oranges compared to the previous year, providing some relief to the growers and traders amidst the increasing competition from Rajasthan.
