Zhongxian County in Chongqing has evolved into a prominent hub for citrus cultivation, leveraging its two-millennium history to develop a comprehensive citrus industrial chain. Tian Changzhong, deputy head of the county, emphasized the goal to elevate the citrus industry to new heights, aiming for national and global recognition for Zhongxian as a leading citrus city.
By 2023, the dedication of over 200,000 local fruit farmers expanded the citrus groves to more than 24,333 hectares, achieving an output value of 5 billion yuan. The county is distinguished by hosting China's largest NFC citrus juice processing center, with an annual processing capacity of 200,000 metric tons. The Zhong Citrus brand, benefiting from national geographical indication protection certification, has seen its value increase to approximately 10.59 billion yuan.
The county's citrus cultivation history, dating back to the Han Dynasty era, has seen significant transformations, especially since 1997 with foreign investment and collaboration with the Chongqing Three Gorges Construction Group. This partnership marked the citrus industry's transition towards modernization and large-scale development, focusing on deep-processing activities, including juice production from both imported and locally developed citrus varieties.
Following agricultural reforms initiated in 2011, the county has enhanced the quality and market appeal of its citrus. Chongqing Paisenbai Orange Juice Co, a local enterprise, established China's first NFC citrus demonstration production line in 2004, contributing significantly to the industry by maintaining a resource bank of 398 citrus varieties and setting national standards for non-reconstituted orange juice.
The integration of primary, secondary, and tertiary industries has been a strategic focus for Zhongxian, aiming to combine ecological preservation with leisure and wellness activities. This approach has not only increased job opportunities and incomes for local farmers but also promoted agritourism, significantly benefiting the local economy and the livelihoods of over 200,000 farmers.
To further drive growth, Zhongxian has invested in technological advancements, establishing a citrus research platform, a citrus innovation research center, and a trial base for new citrus varieties. The development of a comprehensive citrus technology talent pool, involving researchers, agricultural technicians, and experienced farmers, remains a priority to sustain the industry's momentum.
