The Philippines has seen an upturn in its pineapple industry, particularly in exports to China, which is its largest market. In 2023, the Philippines exported 200,000 tons of pineapples to China, thereby securing a dominant position in the Chinese pineapple import market. This expansion is attributed to robust government policies aimed at enhancing the industry's export capabilities.
Philippine pineapple exports reached a value of USD 255 million in 2023. The first half of 2024 already saw exports nearing USD 193 million, indicating a continuing upward trend as the global demand for healthy food options rises. China is the premier export destination, contributing to over 40% of the total export value, with Japan, South Korea, the UAE, Sudan, and New Zealand also being key markets. Companies such as Itochu Corporation, Dole (Shanghai) Fruits and Vegetables Trading, and Lion King Supply Chain Management are among the notable importers of Philippine pineapples.
Most exports are conducted by local growers, with PHILPACK, Dole Philippines, and Mt. Kitanglad Agri-Development being leading exporters. The Philippines benefits from unique geographic advantages and lower cultivation costs, factors that are expected to support the continued growth and success of its pineapple exports.
