BLE week 49:

'Red Delicious were particularly popular during St. Nicholas week'

German offers, led by Elstar, Royal Gala, Jonagold, Boskoop and Braeburn, formed the basis of the range of goods as usual at this time of year. These were followed by Italian deliveries, led by Golden Delicious and Granny Smith. According to the BLE, Red Delicious were particularly popular due to their strong colour during St. Nicholas week and were quickly sold. As in the previous weeks, France primarily contributed Jazz and Pink Lady, which were usually sold quickly. Wellant and Elstar came from the Netherlands, and Boskoop from Belgium. Shipments from Poland only played a minor role in isolated cases. Imports from overseas had almost completely disappeared from the assortment.

Overall, business was relatively uneventful. There was rarely anything to criticise about the quality of the fruit. The traders rarely had cause to modify their previous demands. Generally, the markets are currently showing a significant price increase in the five-year average, but also compared to the previous year. This is due not least to the second-weakest apple harvest in the last 10 years in 2024.

Pears
Italian Abate Fetel, Turkish Santa Maria and Dutch Xenia dominated. Italian Santa Maria and Turkish Deveci had lost some of their relevance. The importance of Dutch Conference pears had also diminished. From Germany, mainly Conference and Xenia were available, flanked by Alexander Lucas.

Table grapes
Peruvian imports now apparently dominated, as the presence of the Italian batches had noticeably diminished. Overall, deliveries from Turkey, Brazil and the Republic of Moldova only played a minor role. Offers from Spain, Ecuador and Namibia were also only traded selectively.

Oranges
Spanish products dominated the scene, with Navelina being the main variety available. Navel varieties also arrived mainly from Italy and Greece. The South African season entered its home stretch, but Valencia Late, Midknight and Delta Seedless were still involved in the action with some shares.

Small citrus fruits
Clementines came primarily from Spain and to a lesser extent from Italy and Morocco. Spanish Clemenules, Oronules and the first Tacle dominated the scene. Italian Caffins with leaves were sought locally. Appealing Turkish imports dominated among Satsumas, while Spanish ones supplemented.

Lemons
Spanish Primofiori together with Turkish Enterdonato dominated the scene. Supplies from South Africa, Greece, and Italy supplemented. Demand rose in some areas due to the autumnal weather, but could be easily satisfied.

Bananas
The supply was sufficiently adapted to the accommodation options. Demand was therefore easily met. As a result, traders only very rarely had to adjust their previous calls.

Cauliflowers
Batches from France, Belgium, and Italy formed the basis of the product range. Dutch, Belgian and Spanish offers were not available every day. Demand was not particularly strong at the beginning, but intensified as the weekend approached.

Lettuce
In the case of iceberg lettuce, Spanish batches were almost the only ones available; only in Cologne, Dutch products were also available. For head lettuce, the end of the domestic season was approaching: domestic offers were no longer available every day.

Cucumbers
When it came to cucumbers, Spanish products were in firm control. Dutch, Belgian and Greek products were also available in some cases. Overall availability had expanded. As a result, prices often showed a downward trend.

Tomatoes
Most of the vine tomatoes came from Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands. The presence of Moroccan tomatoes had increased in the round tomato segment, with Belgian and Spanish items added to the mix. Cherry tomatoes mainly came from Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. Overall, traders often had to adjust their previous demands downwards.

Sweet peppers
Spanish supplies apparently dominated the scene. German, Dutch, Belgian and some Moroccan offers increasingly withdrew from the market. Turkish products were only available occasionally and in limited quantities.
