Portugal’s ASAE seizes 24 tons of fruit in labeling crackdown in Algarve

The Authority for Food and Economic Security (ASAE) in Portugal has recently conducted seizures of 24 tons of fruit in the Algarve region, citing issues with proper labeling. The operation took place in Vila Real de Santo António, focusing on food transport inspections. It was discovered that two shipments containing oranges and avocados lacked the necessary documentation to verify their origin or category. These shipments were associated with two entities involved in goods transportation, leading to the initiation of administrative offense proceedings by ASAE.

According to ASAE, the transporters failed to provide any form of documentation required for identifying the fruit's origin, variety, and category. Consequently, 23.5 tons of oranges, which were sourced from Spain and headed to Silves, along with 650 kilograms of avocados from the Algarve, were confiscated. This action was part of ASAE's efforts, particularly through its Southern Regional Unit - Operational Unit of Faro, to ensure adherence to regulations regarding consumer information and product labeling, specifically the identification of the fruit's origin. The value of the seized goods is estimated at around 6,700 euros, with the operation being supported by the GNR during the road inspection.
