Movement steady on winter squash

Demand for winter squash continues to be steady. "It has been since we started the season in late October," says Raquel Espinoza of Produce House "Hardshell squash is always a good item to have for the Thanksgiving holiday. It also has a market throughout the year. You'll always be able to find it but people tend to buy more hardshell squash during the winter because it holds very well."

Right now, Produce House is shipping acorn, butternut, and spaghetti squash and it's also doing some trials with Delicata squash. The level of supply is similar to last year at this time.

Squash growing regions
As for supply, it is coming out of Mexico. Production started in Hermosillo and then it moved into Guaymas and Sinaloa also has production which is where Produce House is moving to as its next growing region to source product from. "Because there were heat waves during the summer, that stressed the plants so we're tending to see more smaller sizing this season on hardshell squash than in years past, though we did also see this last season," says Espinoza, adding that product from Sinaloa and Sonora should continue to ship until May.

Pricing is mid-range between $12-$14. "That's a good promotable price and movement is steady," she says, adding that demand will continue to peak through to March.
