The Port of Valparaiso experiences its biggest cherry export week ever

The Minister of Agriculture, Esteban Valenzuela, visited the Port of Valparaiso during the busiest week of the Chilean cherry export season. Chile is breaking its cherry export record through the South Pacific Terminal (TPS), with an estimated increase of 40-50% in exports, equivalent to 120 million boxes.

"We are breaking all records. This port, with its extraordinary level of efficiency and working climate, is key for the export of Chilean fruit. This growth generates direct and indirect employment, as well as value throughout the logistics chain, "Valenzuela stated.

The Minister was received by a delegation led by Cristian Rodríguez, the general manager of TPS, Javiera Perales, the Concessions Manager of Empresa Portuaria Valparaíso (EPV), representatives from Frutas de Chile, Customs, SAG and port unions.

Key infrastructure and future challenges
During the visit, the Minister underlined the need to expand the port infrastructure to maintain growth. "The port can operate efficiently for the next ten years, but it is essential to project its expansion to ensure Valparaíso's leadership for at least two more decades," he said.

TPS, currently equipped with 3,400 reefer container connections, is handling unprecedented volumes. This increase responds to the expectations of an exceptional export season, Rodriguez stated. "Our goal is to ensure that the fruit comes out on time, complying with customer demands and quality standards," he said.

Record season for cherries and other fruit
According to EPV data, cherry exports from Valparaiso will increase from 213,000 tons last season to 230,000 tons this year. This increase reinforces Chile's leadership in the global cherry market.

Valparaiso's port system is prepared to face the peak of the season thanks to its experience and logistical capacity, Javiera Perales added. Iván Marambio, president of Frutas de Chile, highlighted public-private collaboration as a key factor in the sector's success.

In addition to cherries, TPS expects to handle high volumes of grapes and other fruits. "We believe this will be an exceptional season for stone fruits and other export products," Rodríguez said.

Operations underway
During the visit, three vessels were serviced at the port: Hapag-Lloyd's Manzanillo Express, Maersk Bayete, and Cool Carriers' Baltic Performer were loaded with refrigerated containers and pallets with fruit. TPS expects to serve a total of 17 Cherry Express vessels this season, consolidating its role as a strategic hub for Chilean foreign trade.

Minister Valenzuela concluded his tour highlighting the importance of coordination between all the actors involved to ensure the success of the season and strengthen Chile's position as a leader in the export of fresh fruit.
