China leads global watermelon production with 60.4 million tons in 2022

In the realm of watermelon production, China stands out as the global leader, marking its dominance by producing 60.4 million tons of watermelon in 2022, as reported by the World Population Review. This figure notably surpasses the output of the runner-up, Turkey, by more than twentyfold. The United States also contributes to the global watermelon supply, generating over three billion pounds annually, with an average consumption rate exceeding 10 pounds per American each year.

The success of watermelon cultivation in China can be attributed to a combination of consumer demand, optimal growing conditions, and a climate that favors watermelon growth. Across approximately 2.5 million acres, Chinese farmers engage in the cultivation of this sweet, red fruit. Regions such as the Gansu Province and Inner Mongolia are pivotal in this endeavor, with the former known for its high-quality watermelons and the latter for producing notably large fruits. This widespread cultivation ensures that watermelons are not only abundant but also accessible and economically priced for consumers throughout China, making it a popular choice during the summer months, whether it be consumed in slices, as juice, or cubed.
