In the first 11 months of 2024, Georgia imported garlic worth $2.769 million (2,575 tons), marking a 124% increase in value and a 43% rise in quantity compared to the previous year. According to data from Geostat, imports in January-November 2023 totaled $1.235 million (1,797 tons).
Garlic prices experienced significant inflation, placing the product second among foods with the highest annual price increases as of December. Prices rose by 46.27% compared to December 2023.
The average cost of 1 kg of imported garlic during January-November 2024 was $1.07, up from approximately $0.68 in the same period last year. These calculations exclude taxes and are based on average values reported by Geostat.
China emerged as the leading garlic supplier, accounting for 45% of Georgia's total imports.
The top five countries supplying garlic to Georgia and their respective import volumes are:
- China: 1,152 tons ($1.35 million)
- Kazakhstan: 904.6 tons ($1.017 million)
- Iran: 343.7 tons ($222900)
- Kyrgyzstan: 109.5 tons ($142000)
- Turkey: 65.33 tons ($36700)
