It's been a rather volatile season for the spring onions from Egypt, says Amro Yassin of Egyptian produce exporter Stars of Export: "The spring onion season in Egypt has had very different sides this year. For the early harvest in the first month, which was October, the season was very positive. However, from November to December the situation changed for the worse, as exporters suffered big losses. Thankfully, the situation has started to improve in January, thanks to increased demand and a decrease in harvested volumes."
Overall, there's been an increase in the total harvested volumes of spring onions this season, Yassin explains. "The production of spring onion has improved this season. Looking at harvested volumes, I'd estimate that the quantities are 20 to 25 per cent more compared to previous years. Our spring onions have mostly been exported to European markets, specifically Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, and the United Kingdom."
There's a positive vibe surrounding the remainder of the spring onion season: "There's more positive news for buyers of Egyptian spring onions, as the prices have become much lower this season, and much more stable. The difference is actually quite large. With this in mind, as well as the increased demand in the United Kingdom at the moment, combined with the decrease in harvested volumes, we expect that the season will be better in the coming period," Yassin concludes.
