Leaderbrand introduces European-style orange melon to New Zealand market

Gisborne-based LeaderBrand is introducing a new melon variety to the New Zealand market, a first for mass cultivation in the country. This melon, yet unnamed, is distinct from traditional options and is set to be available in supermarkets shortly. According to Andrew Rosso, head melon grower at LeaderBrand, this variety offers a unique taste experience, differing notably from the muskiness of rock melons. It is an orange melon, popular in Europe, and part of LeaderBrand's strategy to diversify the melon offerings in New Zealand.

The company aims to encourage broader consumption of melons across meals. This new variety is particularly suited to New Zealand's cooler summer conditions, offering an alternative to the watermelon, which has proven challenging to cultivate. Richard McPhail, LeaderBrand's CEO, pointed out the difficulties in growing watermelons, attributing the challenges to the crop's preference for desert-like conditions, unlike New Zealand's climate. Despite these challenges, the company reported a successful season, attributed to favorable temperatures last November. However, LeaderBrand is focusing on producing smaller fruits to minimize food waste, moving away from the perception that bigger fruits are better.

LeaderBrand processes between 50,000 to 60,000 melons daily, demonstrating a significant scale of operation and commitment to meet consumer demand for melons.
