Pricing reasonable on Mexican and Guatemalan watermelon

The supply of imported watermelon is at a reasonable level right now. "They're at $200/bin and I think we're at a good level," says Dennis Peterson of Riverbend Fresh.

He says the growing conditions for watermelon in the central and southern parts of Mexico and Guatemala have been generally mild. However, the cold temperatures that have been seen throughout the U.S. in January have kept demand for the fruit softer, though generally warm temperatures dictate the demand for watermelon. "I think that we are pretty much going to see the same demand for watermelon," says Peterson.

Pricing spike like 2024?
As for watermelon pricing, Peterson says the current pricing of $200/bin pricing is reasonable. "Last year we had an anomaly in March for no reason where they took pricing up over $500/bin. It was how high can I go versus how high can you go pricing," he says. "Are we going to have that again? I don't know."
