South Africa considers exporting potatoes to Russia

South Africa may soon begin exporting potatoes to Russia, marking a new trade direction beyond its traditional citrus exports. According to Rosselkhoznadzor, discussions have already taken place with South African representatives regarding potential shipments.

In 2024, Russia's potato harvest fell by nearly 11% compared to 2023. Experts attribute this to extreme weather conditions and a reduction in planted areas. Farmers, struggling with low potato prices after a surplus in 2023, scaled back production, contributing to the current market shortage.

To address the issue, the Eurasian Economic Commission approved a duty-free import quota of up to 150,000 tons of potatoes until July 31, 2025. While Russia expects a larger harvest in 2025, it still won't fully meet domestic demand.
