January through March are usually the slower months in terms of banana production in Mexico as a result of slightly lower temperatures compared to the rest of the year. "Volume and availability from our growing region Tecoman in the state of Colima in the Central Pacific region of Mexico is mostly challenged during the first three months of the year," says Audee Rios with Coliman Bananas. "However, recovery is expected to set in at the end of March, early April." Nevertheless, supply is available year-round.
When Coliman started out in the 1960s, the focus was mainly on the domestic market. "We were a producer and marketer of bananas and other products and later on, ventured into ripening and distribution in Northern Mexico. During the first two decades of our existence, we grew into one of the leading suppliers of bananas in Mexico, with a strong presence in the northwestern part of the country," Rios shared.
Exports of organic bananas
However, in 2005 an export program was started up with the initial focus being the export of conventional bananas and other products to the United States. Since then, a robust export program has been developed into North America, Europa, and Asia. Today, North America is still considered a key export market, together with Asia. In both regions, the company has been witnessing growth in its organic banana program in particular. "While Europe and North America are mature markets for organic bananas, Asia still has significant growth potential. Therefore, we've been putting our efforts in the Asian market in the past five years," Rios commented. Coliman's organic banana production started back in 2013 and significantly boosted exports. "Over the years, we've become one of Mexico's leading banana exporters and the largest exporter of organic bananas to Japan and China."
