"Every year we strive to refine our product range in order to respond more and more precisely to the needs of the market," says Samuele Pellegrini, General Manager of Levantia Seed.
The year 2024 was a positive one for Levantia Seed, an Italian seed company that consolidated its position in the pumpkin market and launched several new products, from melons to Middle Eastern and East Asian vegetables and rocket. With a steadily growing product range - the result of a constant commitment to research - the company has reached important milestones, both in terms of its flagship products and in terms of innovative technologies.
Levantia Seed, strengthened by its specialization in the world of pumpkins, continues to invest in variety selection and improvement. Reddy F1, an early and very productive red-skinned Kabocha variety, has been very successful due to its organoleptic quality and ease of cultivation. Levantia has decided to register the Reddy brand in order to give it an even more recognizable identity and thus increase the value of the product: an additional weapon for growers investing in this distinctive pumpkin.
"In the Levantia pumpkin range, Dulcimaks F1 remains a reference for the production of green Kabocha in Italy. It continues to confirm its leading position in its segment, thanks to the quality of the fruit and its ability to adapt to different seasons," emphasizes Pellegrini.
But the big news for 2024 goes by the name of Dulcistore F1, a green Kabocha variety with high performance when it comes to shelf life. "This variety is characterized by its floury flesh and its shelf life, maintaining its green color, which is synonymous with freshness, even during long storage periods," explains the manager.
There is no shortage of products for the industrial sector, such as Hambra F1, long-lasting butternut suitable for the fresh market as well as for processing due to its adaptability to peeling and industrial processing. These and other novelties will be presented in Levantia Seed's new pumpkin catalog.
"There will be new varieties for the different segments, both for the fresh market and for industrial processing, as well as for perennial pumpkins," announces Pellegrini. "It will not be a standard catalog, but a real tool for growers, as it will have a detailed technical section where we will answer the most common questions asked by customers, with details on plant quality, planting patterns, and sowing schedule."
Other new varieties in 2024 include Midori F1 melon, Green Cup F1 pak choi, and Padua rocket, which are rapidly gaining acceptance for their unique characteristics.
"Midori F1 has confirmed its great potential, especially in central and southern Italy," explains Pellegrini. "It differs from traditional melons in its oval shape, cream-colored skin with green spots, and sweet white-green flesh that peaks at 17-18 degrees Brix. With these characteristics, it attracted the attention of melon specialists, who appreciated it for its distinctive flavor and appearance."
"Green Cup F1 (pictured on the right), a pak choi valued for its seed set tolerance and versatility, has attracted a lot of interest. It responds well to both direct sowing and transplanting, allowing growers to optimize their production cycles," says Pellegrini. It anticipates the timing, with plant homogeneity, which benefits crop productivity."
"Padua, a wild rocket with high seed set tolerance, is another Levantia flagship that stands out for its dark green leaves and characteristics that make it perfect for summer sowing."
