U.S. vegetable production 2024: Declines in tomatoes, sweet corn, and asparagus, while broccoli and carrots gain in value

The 2024 vegetable production report highlights significant shifts in crop yields, planted and harvested areas, and market values across multiple categories. Many key vegetable crops experienced declines in production, with asparagus down 14%, snap beans down 21%, and sweet corn down 14% from 2023 levels. Meanwhile, some crops saw modest increases, such as cantaloupes (up 1%), cauliflower (up 5%), and honeydew (up 11%). Changes in planted and harvested areas played a crucial role in these trends, with reductions seen in head lettuce, romaine lettuce, and onions, while squash and sweet potatoes saw an increase in planted acreage. Market values fluctuated as well, with carrots rising to $1.72 billion (up 1%) and broccoli increasing to $1.09 billion (up 9%), whereas garlic and tomatoes saw notable value declines of 29% and 23%, respectively.

Regulatory updates and regional reporting adjustments also impacted the dataset. Asparagus estimates were discontinued in California, while new estimates for kale, beets, and cabbage were introduced in select states. Meanwhile, the onion report no longer includes Colorado, and Texas replaced Florida in cantaloupe estimates. In terms of market utilization, the fresh market remained the dominant destination for most crops, with processing shares varying significantly. The data underscores the effects of changing climate conditions, market demands, and agricultural policies, shaping the current and future landscape of vegetable production in the U.S.
