The World Processing Tomato Council (WPTC) has released its global forecast for processing tomatoes in 2025, estimating global production at 40.5 million metric tonnes (mt), an 11.5% decline from 2024. WPTC member countries account for 92% of this volume. The Northern Hemisphere is projected to contribute 37.5 million mt, while the Southern Hemisphere is forecast to produce 3.05 million mt.
Within the Northern Hemisphere, the Association Méditerranéenne Internationale de la Tomate (AMITOM), which represents tomato processors in Mediterranean countries, expects production to remain largely unchanged at 17.15 million mt in 2025, a marginal year-on-year (y-o-y) decline of 0.4%. However, exact figures remain uncertain as farmer planting negotiations are ongoing. Production from AMITOM's EU members is forecast at 10.15 million mt, a 5% y-o-y decline.
Outside the AMITOM region, WPTC members in the Northern Hemisphere are projected to produce 17.4 million mt, down by 23% y-o-y. This includes California at 9.25 million mt, China at 6 million mt, Brazil at 1.6 million mt, Canada at 520,000 mt, and Japan at 26,000 mt. The overall reduction is driven primarily by a 14% y-o-y decrease in California's planted area to approximately 200,000 acres, resulting in a 7% production decline. In China, production is expected to fall by 42% y-o-y, as low prices in 2024 have reduced grower interest in planting for the 2025 season.
In the Southern Hemisphere, the 2025 harvest is underway. WPTC members are forecast to produce 2.46 million mt, representing 81% of the total Southern Hemisphere production, which is projected to remain stable y-o-y at 3.05 million mt. Production levels in all reported Southern Hemisphere countries are expected to be unchanged compared with 2024.
