In the 2024-25 season, Chile has exported over 17,000 tons of fresh fruit to South Korea, marking a 56.90% increase from the previous year. Miguel Canala-Echeverría, general manager of Frutas de Chile, noted, "As of January, Korea is the second largest destination in Asia for our fruit and the ninth largest globally." He highlighted the potential in Korea, with over 51 million consumers and a per capita fruit consumption of 55 kilograms. Apples, strawberries, citrus fruits, cherries, grapes, and kiwis are preferred, presenting opportunities for Chilean off-season supply.

Efforts are ongoing with Subrei and the Chilean Embassy in Seoul to update the FTA, aiming to equalize tariffs on oranges and table grapes. This issue has been challenging, with complex negotiations required. Chile exports table grapes, lemons, blueberries, cherries, avocados, oranges, and kiwis to Korea, with plans to prioritize fresh plums.
South Korea ranks as the 12th largest economy globally by GDP, with a notable fruit consumption rate despite a 20% decline over 15 years due to supply shortages and rising prices. Chilean fruits complement local produce, especially temperate climate fruits. In 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs reported that mandarins and apples led per capita consumption, followed by pears, grapes, peaches, and persimmons.
With 70% of its population under 40, South Korea's demographic is adopting more Western consumption patterns. Within Asia, Korea stands out for its quality demands on imports.
