The use of vermicompost: Two cases from Apulia, Italy

Improving plant vigor in stone fruit and increasing yields in cucurbits

Regenerative agriculture is gaining popularity for its ability to improve productivity and soil health in a natural and sustainable way. Among the most effective practices is the use of vermicompost, which has been shown to have extraordinary effects on soil fertility.

Two farms in Apulia, Torrente Locone (Andria - BAT) and Colle di Seta (Ruvo di Puglia - Bari), have recently tested the humus produced by Greenta and found significant benefits on their stone fruit and cucurbit crops.

More resistant and productive stone fruits: The case of Torrente Locone
"We have noticed a significant improvement in the vegetative recovery of our plants," says Giuseppe Lombardi, owner of Torrente Locone, an organic farm specializing in peach production. "The soil has retained a better structure and water capacity, which has favored more balanced growth. We noticed improved bud formation, with the trees showing an earlier and more uniform vegetative vigor, reducing the initial development time.

In addition to an increase in flowering and fruit set, there was also a greater resistance to climatic stress: The trees had a better tolerance to temperature fluctuations in spring, thus reducing fruit drop."

The experience of Colle di Seta: increased yields of cucurbits and solanaceous plants
The Colle di Seta farm, which specializes in the production of cucurbits and solanaceous plants such as courgettes, melons, and tomatoes, has tested the use of vermicompost on its crops and has obtained results in terms of increased productivity and better root development, as it helps to develop a more extensive and resistant root system, improving water and nutrient uptake.

"We have seen our plants grow more vigorously and increase production by no less than 15%," says Michelangelo Cantatore, owner of Colle di Seta. The vermicompost has made a difference, especially in the improvement of the quantity and the quality of the fruit."
