Canary Islands bananas open new markets with organic and biodynamic certification

Last week, the world's leading organic products fair, Biofach, was held in Nuremberg. The fair focused on certifications.

Europlátano's commercial team, a representative of the Dreiskel Biodinámica certification company, and specialized producers traveled to Germany to establish new commercial contacts in preparation for an export project for Demeter-certified Canarian bananas, which are very popular in Germany.

"Our product was well received during the fair. This is an important first step for a new export project to Germany and other European countries," Europlátano reported.

Demeter is a certification that regulates and guarantees that food products meet Organic and Biodynamic Agriculture standards. "Thanks to the international recognition of the Demeter label, consumers see these products as healthier and more environmentally friendly," Europlátano stated.

In 2020, the Laureles de la Mangla farm in the south of Tenerife was the first in this sector to be Demeter certified. It is a 14-hectare farm that only grows bananas on 8 hectares. The rest of the surface contributes to the biodiversity of the ecosystem. The farm produces around 550,000 kg of organic biodynamic bananas a year.

Following in the footsteps of these pioneers, Europlátano and its marketing organization Mercamusa have now also obtained this certification that allows them to sell this banana and continue to grow in the European market. It is the first Canary banana with both a cultivation and a trade certificate under this strict quality mark.

In addition, Europlátano has around four million kilos of organic bananas annually, which are supplied to various Spanish and foreign customers. The company expects to continue expanding its customer base this year.

According to Europlanano, "The fair also made clear that there are differences between European bananas and overseas organic bananas. The former are more in line with the organic philosophy because they are grown much closer to the European market and therefore have a much lower CO2 footprint, which is also certified. In addition, the organoleptic difference is evident. Consumers who taste the Canary bananas do not want anything else, according to some purchasing managers of important German distribution chains."
