Sri Lanka's elephant orphanage celebrates 50th anniversary with fruit feast

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka marked its 50th anniversary with a fruit feast for its 68 elephants. The animals enjoyed pineapples, bananas, melons, and cucumbers, while visitors were treated to milk rice and traditional sweets. Established in 1975, the orphanage has a successful breeding program with four generations of elephants, ranging from 18 months to 70 years old. A major tourist attraction, it generates millions in revenue from entry fees. The elephants receive tons of food daily, and visitors can participate in their bathing ritual in the nearby Maha Oya River.
