Germany is one of Europe's leading importers of fruits and vegetables. In 2023, Spain was its main supplier of lettuce, cucumber, citrus, melon, watermelon, and stone fruits; the Netherlands was its main supplier of potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, grapes, bananas, and pineapples; and Italy, its main apple supplier.
In 2023, Germany imported 9.3 million tons of fruits and vegetables for 14,846 million euros. The Netherlands was its leading supplier, with 3 million tons and 5,265 million euros. Spain ranked second with 2.7 million tons and 4,816 million euros, and Italy third with 982,248 tons and 1,556 million euros.
Germany imported more fruits and vegetables from the Netherlands but Spain was its leading supplier of lettuce, cabbage, cucumber, citrus, melon, watermelon, and stone fruits, according to data from the EU Statistics Office, Eurostat, processed by Fepex.
In 2023, Germany imported 247,415 tons of lettuce. 130,716 tons came from Spain, 44,722 tons from Italy, and 35,638 tons from the Netherlands. It imported 229,324 tons of cabbages; 75,559 tons from Spain, 63,811 tons from Italy, and 50,523 tons from the Netherlands. Germany imported 601,838 tons of cucumber; 269,031 tons from Spain, and 223,031 from the Netherlands.
Spain was Germany's leading supplier of citrus accounting for 760,354 tons of the one million tons that Germany imported. It was also its main supplier of melons and watermelons, accounting for 285,948 tons of the 612,278 tons imported by the German market, and of stone fruits, accounting for 240,704 tons of the 384,720 tons imported.
The Netherlands was Germany's largest fruit and vegetable supplier, re-exporting many products from other origins to the German market. It was its main supplier of potatoes, accounting for 246,598 tons of the 534,237 tons this market imported, led tomato supply with 341,418 tons, followed by Spain with 155,216 tons. In 2023, Germany imported 698,253 tons of tomatoes.
The Netherlands was also Germany's main supplier of carrots (165,166 tons) and onions (146,266 tons). The Dutch were also Germany's main supplier of bananas, accounting for 503,585 tons of the 1.3 million tons that they imported, pineapple, with 319,169 tons of the total 455,486 tons imported, and grapes, with 175,998 tons of 422,198 tons.
Italy was the German market's third-biggest supplier. They led the apple and pear supply, accounting for 229,016 tons of the 679,533 tons imported by the Germans.
