"Staay Food Group resumes its own melon production in Costa Rica"

"Rain delays start of season"

The new Costa Rica melon season is about to begin. The first melons are expected this week, about two weeks later than usual. Due to unusual rainfall late last year and in January, Staay Food Group chose to plant the melons later.

"At the same time, we decided to extend the supply from our cultivation sites in Brazil to ensure a smooth seasonal transition," says Matthijs Vlasblom. "This Costa Rica season, in addition to yellow and Galia melons, our range once again includes watermelons, both seeded and seedless. After the Costa Rica season ends, we will continue melon cultivation with our growing partners in Spain, allowing us to maintain a year-round supply from Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama, and Spain."

Additional focus on mini watermelons
"For some time, we have seen a continued increase in demand for mini (seedless) watermelons. That's why we have placed additional focus on growing these melons. We are pleased to have successfully increased the volume of these varieties this season," says Matthijs Vlasblom.

Diversifying cultivation locations
To ensure a stable supply, Staay Food Group has spread its own production across four locations in Costa Rica and two in Panama. "With increasingly unpredictable weather conditions, we must continue to mitigate risks," he explains.

"Due to the erratic weather patterns, we expect a slightly lower overall volume from Costa Rica this season. The heavy rainfall has led to losses—both in the field and during our strict grading process. However, the first shipments have given us confidence, and we look forward to the initial arrivals for our customers in European retail, food service, and wholesale."
