On February 25, the Government of Moldova announced that India has fully opened its market for Moldovan apples. According to the official statement, on January 21, the Indian Ministry of Agriculture completed all necessary procedures and included Moldova in the list of countries permitted to supply apples by India's phytosanitary standards.
To comply with Indian regulations, exporters must meet specific requirements, including the cold-treating of apples before shipment. The National Food Safety Agency in Moldova will certify this process.
"Moldova has successfully expanded its export markets for apples. We will continue to support our producers to enhance the competitiveness of Moldovan products and ensure a stable business environment in new markets," said Prime Minister Dorin Recean.
Moldova began efforts to access the Indian market two years ago. In 2023, the country conducted trial shipments and exported 340 tons of apples to India.
Moldova has already increased its apple exports to the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia now ranking fourth among its export destinations.
According to experts, red apple varieties, especially Red Chief, are in high demand in India, particularly from December to February. However, Turkey and Iran remain Moldova's main competitors in this market.
In 2024, Moldova produced around 450,000 tons of apples. Its apple orchards cover over 50,000 hectares, cultivating more than 20 varieties, including Florina, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, and Renet Simirenko. Moldova is also among the global leaders in apple production per capita, averaging 250 kg per year.
