Kiwi producers in Farroupilha, Brazil, are set to commence the harvest season. The official event marking the start of the kiwi harvest is scheduled for Wednesday morning on the property of the Bohn family, located in the interior of the city.
The local government anticipates a harvest of approximately 200 tons of kiwi. Currently, kiwi cultivation occurs on 10 different properties within Farroupilha. Of the total yield, 10 tons are allocated for Fenakiwi, a fair scheduled from July 3 to 20, with the city government purchasing this portion for the event. The official launch of the fair will be in March.
Rennan Bondan, the Municipal Secretary of Agriculture, indicated that the precise harvest total will be disclosed after completion, with expectations to exceed 200 tons. "Kiwi cultivation is continuing in the city. Recently, the Department of Agriculture and Emater visited properties in the region. We noticed that some producers are increasing the area under cultivation, which is very positive," he stated.
In 2010, the kiwi crop faced challenges when Ceratocystis fimbriata affected the trees. Since then, studies have been conducted to address the issue, and incentives for kiwi cultivation have been sustained, securing Farroupilha's status as the leading kiwifruit producer in the country.
