Andew Gomez with GreenFruit Avocados

“We have year-round availability of avocados from Colombia”

Steady volumes of avocados from Colombia have been coming into the U.S. "The old crop started in November/December and ran through January/February and never before, have we brought in so much volume during these months. For the first time, we will have Colombian fruit year-round," says Andrew Gomez with GreenFruit Avocados. "Volume and sizing were good, and we capitalized on the fact that lower volumes were coming in from Mexico," Gomez added. This was partly related to the tariff situation.

Increase in volume
The expectations for the upcoming 2025 crop are high. "Looking at our orchards, we expect to have about 25 to 30 percent more volume compared to 2024." The majority of this additional volume will come to the U.S. market and some volume will make its way into Europe. "Proximity is the main reason for most Colombian fruit ending up in the U.S., but the Peruvian season also plays a role that time of year. Peru is expected to send large volumes to Europe, which will push Colombia to limit their shipments into Europe and look to the USA as their main player this season," Gomez shared.

Stability in the market
Colombia's main crop, called Traviesa, will start in April with the first volume arriving in the U.S. market that same month. Harvest of the main season will continue through August or September. "From there, we will gradually enter the smaller crop and will have avocados from Colombia available year-round. We've been growing avocados in Colombia for more than seven years and it's very exciting to see everything come together now," Gomez added. The combination of Colombia's growing volume and year-round availability brings stability in the market. "Surety of supply is key for our retail partners and the stability that Colombia offers is very attractive to them. We are currently offering promotional long-term pricing for the first time this year."

In the past five years, the quality of the fruit has significantly improved. "Growers have been doing their due diligence when it comes to quality, and they are handling the fruit better compared to the beginning years." In addition, Mother Nature has been very cooperative. "Perfect weather conditions have helped in bringing high quality fruit into the market."
