"For the next season, we will have 300 hectares of land, including our own and that of our member growers, 250 of which will be dedicated to watermelons."
After the planting in the greenhouses, the transplanting in the polytunnels is also in progress. A total of 70 hectares will be covered.
"Looking at the advanced state of the plants, we can already estimate the approximate date when the Eleonora brand watermelon harvest will begin, with the first harvest scheduled for the first ten days of May. The mild weather conditions are conducive to an early harvest." According to Salvatore Lotta, the organization's sales manager, "The plants are in an excellent stage of development and growth."
"Compared to last year, we have more than tripled the area of the new seedless watermelon Gavina Total Black, which will be the novelty of the summer and will be in the catalogs of many operators. A new seedless fruit, with sizes from 1.2 to 2 kg, compact and crunchy. Gavina and Eleonora continue to be top-selling items for buyers, along with Majores and Corallo."
The manager points out that exports account for 20 percent of the volumes that are sold in Europe. "We have received several confirmations for next year. Some new customers are coming in and are interested in planning a steady supply. We are committed to guaranteeing the product to customers in Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Germany, where we supply watermelons and melons to seven major retail chains. In Italy, while supply to the fresh produce markets is still limited, the number of supermarket chains to which we supply these summer-only items continues to grow, with a program that runs until the end of September and involves a total of 15 chains. There are no agronomic problems to report, only difficulties related to the water emergency. Our hope is that the summer months will be warm enough for consumption to be brisk and without any loss of value."
