Potato demand in UK steady as planting progresses

Retail demand and home consumption are steady and improving, especially with the recent colder weather. Trade for the food service sector also improved after the bank holiday weekend. It is estimated that plantings of early Queens are over 70% complete in Wexford. As plantings continue, growers are reminded to grow for their markets.

In relation to the Cyprus crop, exports have declined by nearly 50% over the last eight years and this year volumes will be restricted by recent frost damage. Plantings are reported to be progressing well in the U.K. Growth has been slow lately due to cold weather.
