Daniel Badger - Vitafresh

"The sweet potato market is hot at the moment"

"The sweet potato market is hot at the moment," said Daniel Badger from Vitafresh. "The Egyptian season is finishing and US supplies are short. There is not much coming from Honduras and the sweet potatoes from South America are a bit pricey."

Vitafresh is looking to bridge the gap in supply with sweet potatoes from South Africa. "The South African season is just starting; we will be packing next week with the first shipments arriving in Europe and the UK in around three week's time. The sweet potato production in South Africa is up and coming, we don't have huge volumes this season, but hope to increase them next year. We have three different varieties, the purple Murasaki, the white Bonita and the orange Orleans variety."

Growing conditions have been good in South Africa said Daniel, "We have had a good dry summer which sweet potatoes like. We will export 10 containers this season, the export season will last around three months until the Egyptian product is back on the market."
