Demand for Canadian-grown produce has been growing in the face of uncertainty with the ongoing trade dispute between Canada and the USA. This awareness of where food comes from and who produces it is an important part of building a better food system: one that is more just, more transparent, and most importantly, more resilient. Heading into the new growing season in Canada, farmers will be encouraged to focus their crops on meeting the increased local demand.

With many decades of focus on exports and economic integration with the USA, the food system has a significant seasonal reliance on fresh foods that are imported during our winter and early spring months as Canadian fields lie dormant under snow and cold temperatures. Lauren Stallard Wedderburn, sales and marketing manager at Pfenning's Organic Vegetables has been working with the team on communicating this side of the story transparently.

"Our Pfenning's Brand import program is important because it signals to shoppers that they are supporting our Ontario organic farm, even if the product itself is imported. This program helps us meet retailers' needs and sustain year-round operations – providing staff with reliable employment. Relationships with our U.S. partners have been built over decades. Our team looks forward to continuing to grow relationships with existing and new partners at CPMA Montreal in April," says Stallard Wedderburn.
Pfenning's Organic Vegetables Inc. began as a single 100-acre family farm in New Hamburg, Ontario in 1981 and has grown to just over 700 acres. As distributors, the company has always been a local first company – acting as a hub for Ontario organic growers to bring their product to market. Whatever cannot be sourced locally is imported – always certified organic. This allows the company to offer a full selection of organic produce year-round to retailers, distributors, and processors across Ontario and beyond.
