$19 Japanese strawberries spark buzz at Los Angeles luxury grocer

Elly Amai strawberries, sourced from Kyoto, Japan, are now available at Erewhon, a luxury grocery chain in Los Angeles, USA. Priced at $18.99 per strawberry, these imports have sparked interest online.

The store owner highlights that these strawberries are harvested at "the ripest moment" and reach shelves within 24-48 hours. Known for their absence of sourness or astringency, these organic strawberries represent a mere 0.002% of Japan's production. Each berry is cultivated for symmetry, color, and size.

Transported by air from Japan, these strawberries are intended for high-end outlets in Los Angeles. According to an Elly Amai representative, they are picked two days before the US sale and should be consumed within three days.

Elly Amai's representative states, "The fast shipping to get the strawberries to the US ensures freshness and flavor. That's why the price is so high. Don't mention the price, just enjoy these strawberries."

The strawberries have garnered attention on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Users describe them as tasty and fresh but "expensive." Some question the cost, suggesting it's a luxury for the affluent. However, enthusiasts willing to pay the price report the strawberries as "very delicious.

Alyssa Antoci, 22, an influencer, shared a TikTok video declaring, "This is the best strawberry," after tasting it.

Erewhon operates 10 stores in Los Angeles, attracting locals and tourists, partly due to its celebrity clientele. Influencers frequently feature Erewhon's offerings on social media.
