There is a reaction from the Ecuadorian banana sector following remarks by "political figures" impacting banana exporters due to alleged drug trafficking connections. The Ecuadorian Banana Marketing and Export Association (Acorbanec) labeled these statements as "malicious and biased." This emerged after the presidential debate between candidates Daniel Noboa and Luisa González.
Acorbanec expressed solidarity with its affiliated exporters, whose image and reputation have been impacted. Representing 43% of Ecuador's banana exports, Acorbanec acknowledged the challenging security situation in the country, noting that the banana sector faces continuous drug contamination of containers, affecting the nation's reputation and causing sector losses.
The banana sector generates over 250,000 jobs and accounts for 66% of Ecuador's port and shipping traffic, moving over 5,100 containers weekly to more than 70 countries, making it highly susceptible to drug contamination.
Acorbanec mentioned that the banana export sector has privately invested over US$130 million in security measures to prevent cargo contamination with illicit substances. This initiative, alongside efforts by the national government, Armed Forces, and National Police, including port scanners and full cargo inspections, has decreased narcotic shipments from Ecuador. Belgian authorities recognized this, noting a reduction in seized drugs from 121 metric tons in 2023 to 44 metric tons in 2024.
"At Acorbanec, we reiterate our commitment to continue collaborating with the authorities to implement measures that guarantee the protection and integrity of our exports," the union concluded.
