São Paulo begins avocado exports to Chile and Japan

The state of São Paulo, Brazil's largest avocado producer, has initiated exports to Chile and Japan, targeting high-value markets. This follows phytosanitary missions since 2023 to evaluate compliance with import standards. Chile, the world's second-largest avocado consumer per capita, presents a notable opportunity.

"Per capita consumption in Chile is around 8 kg per person per year and continues to rise. This year is experimental, but we expect meaningful growth ahead," said Lígia Carvalho, producer and director at Jaguary.

Guilherme Piai, São Paulo's Secretary of Agriculture and Supply, noted that these trade openings enhance the competitiveness of the state's fruit sector. He highlighted São Paulo's capacity to meet international phytosanitary standards, which attracts further investment in local agriculture.

Japan, a major fresh fruit importer, offers a complex opportunity with its stringent quality and safety standards, alongside logistical challenges such as air transport.

According to IEA-Apta data, São Paulo's avocado production exceeded 223,000 tons in 2024, with key areas in Ourinhos, Mogi Mirim, and São João da Boa Vista. Despite growing domestic demand, Brazilian consumption remains below global averages. The Hass avocado, originating from California, is gaining popularity for its nutritional benefits and culinary versatility.

São Paulo's Coordenadoria de Defesa Agropecuária (CDA) oversees certification to ensure export readiness. This involves technical inspections to verify pest control compliance.
