Laura Grostieta Rodríguez, Grosla:

"We developed the idea of freezing the product due to the logistical problems associated with exporting fresh avocado"

Demand for processed avocado products is on the rise, driven by consumers looking for healthy convenience products with a long shelf life.

Grosla is a Mexican company fully committed to exporting frozen guacamole and avocado pulp. It is headquartered in Mexico City, but its production is in Michoacán. Founded five years ago, its products address a specific need: offering a product that maintains its freshness and quality despite the logistical complexities of exporting.

"We began by trying to export fresh avocados, but we encountered many problems. Consequently, the product often arrived damaged. That's why we developed the idea of frozen avocado products," stated Laura Grostieta Rodríguez.

Currently, Grosla mainly exports to Singapore and Malaysia, which account for about 60% of its shipments. The remaining 40% is sent to the United States. Their primary products include natural avocado pulp, traditional guacamole, and a spicy version with habanero pepper. Everything is based on their own recipes. "Our recipes are unique, and we don't use any preservatives. Thanks to freezing, the product can last up to a year," Laura stated. The product's versatility makes it appealing to restaurants, hotels, and even the cosmetics industry.

Grosla ships around three to six containers every six months, depending on the season. In the last three months of the year, demand for avocados traditionally rises, along with prices. During the rest of the year, prices are more competitive. "When the product is cheaper, our production increases, and so do sales," Laura added. This flexibility allows them to adapt to market trends without compromising quality.

A major advantage of Grosla is the use of HPP technology (high-pressure processing), which, combined with the freezing process, ensures that the product has a longer shelf life without altering the avocado's properties. "The secret is in the packaging and the technology. This allows us to maintain freshness and taste without chemical additives," Laura stressed.

However, not everything happens automatically. The company sometimes faces capacity challenges in the factory during peak periods and logistical issues such as delays at ports. Fortunately, collaboration with a freight forwarder has enabled them to optimize routes, mitigate risks, and provide more efficient service.

"We recently participated in an international trade fair that allowed us to establish interesting contacts in Europe and Latin America. We have attracted interest from Italy, Spain, Germany, Chile, Colombia, and Argentina. We aim to reach the entire world," she stated.

"This business model not only generates economic value for Mexico but also positively impacts the producing communities of Michoacán. By processing the product in Mexico, we create jobs in the Michoacán region and reduce food waste. Furthermore, exporting the already processed and packaged product minimizes the environmental footprint associated with repackaging and transportation," Laura Grostieta stated.
