"Egyptian garlic could be a very good alternative for importers from the USA"

The last few containers of the fresh garlic have been loaded for one Egyptian garlic exporter, says Ahmed Adel, CEO of Global Veg Egy: "When it comes to the garlic trade in Egypt, the month of April is a really very important and busy month for us. At the beginning of April, we loaded our last containers of fresh garlic for this season. Afterwards, we started loading our semi-dry garlic season, which will continue for only a single month. Simultaneously, our preparations for the dry garlic season have been ongoing, as this season starts in the first week of May."

According to Adel, the prices for garlic increased a few weeks ago, as demand has been solid all over the world. "There has been strong demand for garlic, as we have anticipated. We have sufficient harvest for this season, but because of the strong demand on a global scale, as well as the big demand on the Egyptian domestic market, the prices of raw materials have started to increase again. Prices for garlic in general increased around two weeks ago, and I believe it will continue to go up, especially when markets like Taiwan, which taking huge volumes from Egypt, will start importing by end of this month."

The United States' putting massive tariffs on China will have an impact on the garlic they import from the Chinese. Adel feels Egyptian garlic could fill that gap: "I believe the current situation with tariffs will impact only the shipments towards the United States, which normally rely heavily on the Chinese market. However, with the current tariffs in place and the pause that president Trump recently announced, Egyptian garlic could be a very good alternative for importers from the USA."

"The real challenge for us when it comes to dry garlic is to deliver the correct quality and sizes for our customers on time, especially with the logistical issues we have seen this year. I will reiterate that we don't really care about total export volumes this year, so we only accept the orders that we know we can fulfill on time," Adel concludes.
